Dear Students, Alumni & Citizens,On behalf of the President's House Foundation, we are writing to share our concerns and hopes for the future of our President’s House. Below, we outline our past actions, current activities, and future options for your consideration. We understand that the property remains on the market at just over five million dollars. In January, Regents Chairman Harold Reynolds, President Morehead, and Wright Mitchell of the Georgia Trust agreed that it would be important to include preservation easements in any sale of the property. To date, we believe one bid was submitted and later withdrawn, while two additional bids from our Foundation were rejected without explanation, with all earnest money returned. Currently, we believe there are no active bids. Our proposals to the Regents and University Administration requested the formation of a task force to explore adaptive reuse options that could serve students, alumni, and the broader community. Despite the time and effort dedicated to offering alternatives to a sale, we have yet to receive a response. As part of our continued commitment, we are actively considering alternative concepts to preserve the property’s historical value. One idea to foster community engagement is the creation of an alumni club modeled after the Alabama Club in Tuscaloosa. Another proposal envisions a development similar to Barnsley Gardens in Georgia, which would allow some additional development while protecting public access and historical significance.During a recent property survey, we examined ways to incorporate new structures while preserving the existing house and gardens. We are also exploring ways to include the Vince Dooley hydrangea garden and Coach Dooley’s “Room of Bulldog History” offered by Barbara Dooley for potential relocation on the property. We believe these features could enhance the property’s value as a shared community resource. We are meeting with the Alumni Association to explore alumni involvement in this preservation effort. Additionally, we fully support President Morehead’s interest in restoring the Wray-Nicholson historic house and gardens presumably for official University functions. We see the President’s House as a complementary site for similar University purposes.Looking forward, we respectfully urge the Regents and Administration to consider alternative uses for the President’s House. As trustees of this irreplaceable asset, we believe there is an obligation to thoroughly explore options before pursuing a sale. Again we ask all involved stakeholders, including the Board of Regents, the University Administration, and the Alumni Association, to collaborate with us on a plan that best serves our University community. We request your support and action in preserving this property for future generations. As President Morehead stated at the chamber of commerce breakfast, “the decision of the sale is in the hands of the Board of Regents” therefore we are asking for our Regents to set up a task force to meet with this foundation for a constructive conversation.Sincerely,The President's House Foundation[email protected]
